I think at least part of the answer is that the rails are mounted on wooden
ties that are set loosly on crushed rock. Thus, the ties can move laterally
quite easily and expansion of the rails can be accomidated by this movement.
Since the rails are firmly attached to the ties the spacing of the rails is
maintained and so the trains don't mind this little bit of lateral movement.
