Subject: Boom and Crane

First, a sketch:
|\ This is a boom-crane arrangement I used in the lab to
| \ illustrate vertical and horizontal components of vectors.
| \ I guess it gives them a chance to verify vector components
| \ but that isn't my problem.
| \ Q : Why is the boom-crane arangement a good machine?

It would be good for this use.
| \ Q : Is it ideal that the ===== be horizontal when in use?

Yes. If your goal is to illustrate horizontal and vertical
components, then the ====== must be horizontal.
======| Q : What makes it effective/efficient/useful?

It would be good if you could measure the tensions in the various
members.

Hope this helps.
