Re: Macs with PC cards

Apple sold 2.179 billion dollars worth of product during the last 3
months. During the first quarter they also sold over 2 billion dollars
worth of product. Certainly, there are those who will profit if Apple
goes away and the FUD from those quarters is interesting to watch.

And that would surely be unfortunate since Microsoft would then lose
its R&D department.
There are now a number of other Apple clone makers. Their sales are
projected to be in the $600-$800 million range this year.

Apple has a very strange position on clones. They seem to want to
relegate them to niche markets -- high performance only, market in
Europe only, etc. There was rumor a while back of a deal with Gateway
that fell through because Apple feared the stiff competition on price
that would result but they are not going to be able to have it both
ways and continue as a force in the computer market. The new
management _may_ have changed its mind if the latest deal with IBM is
any indication. I think ultimately Apple is going to have to realize
that its real strength is software, not hardware, and quit worrying
about whose platform the OS is running on. There's more money in
software anyway.
