Laboratory Manager for Science, Mathematics and Engineering Core Courses

We are seeking an individual to coordinate and manage a new undergraduate
teaching laboratory for a set of interdisciplinary Science, Mathematics
and Engineering Core courses being developed for nontechnical majors at
Stanford University.

Each of the courses will have one laboratory session approximately every
two weeks throughout the academic year and will share a common laboratory
facility.

The laboratory manager will work with faculty teaching the courses and
will have some responsibility for coordinating the graduate teaching
assistants assigned to the courses. The laboratory manager will have the
opportunity to work with faculty and teaching assistants in the design and
implementation of demonstrations and experiments.

The duties associated with this position include:
- setting up and preparing classroom demonstrations, working from general
instructions and with responsibility for procuring needed materials.
- scheduling and/or coordinating the use of the laboratory and equipment.
- issuing laboratory equipment to teaching assistants and students and being
responsible for its return.
- requisitioning or purchasing expendable supplies and minor equipment.
- maintaining and controlling an inventory of a variety of expendable
supplies and minor equipment.
- performing, supervising and/or coordinating preventive maintenance and
repair of all equipment; determining proper method of repair (e.g.
inhouse or outside repair).
- coordinating with custodial personnel for maintenance of the physical
condition of the laboratories.
- ordering and coordinating physical alterations and improvements as
directed.

Qualifications: The candidate must have a scientific background as well as
general competence in math and computing. Because of the interdisciplinary
nature of the courses, some knowledge in at least two of the following
fields in desirable: physics, chemistry, biology, and earth sciences.

Term: The position is full-time for 10 months of the year, with a
three-year term and possibility of renewal.
