I've been using the Van de Graff in my high school physics class for
years. I
have never had a really successful student hair stand on end demo.

I have had great success.

Rule 1
watch the weather if you have the luxury. Look for cold days and clear
skies. this is lower humidity.

Rule 2
prep the van de graff. Take off the ball's top. withthe hairdryer on a
medium setting, blow it downthe throut of the unit for about 45 seconds.
Clean the dome and let it dry.

Rule 3
Insulate the user. Careful, a big charge will be stored. Go to the hdwre
store and buy 2 packages of insulatinf foam sheets. Stack them up. Place a
piece of wood on top of them. the wood prevents hte users shoes from
denting the styrofoam. My stack is about 10 inches high. Each sheet of foam
is about 5/8th of an inch thick abd 1 foot wide by 4 feet long.

Rule 4
Place both hands on the van de graff.
