[Phys-L] ASU MNS in Physics for HS Teachers

ASU's MNS degree in physics for HS teachers has in-state tuition for 15
western states

[Colleagues: Please forward to teachers who might be interested. -- Jane

November 2018
ATTENTION HIGH SCHOOL PHYSICS & CHEMISTRY TEACHERS:

Want to apply for the Master of Natural Science (MNS) degree in physics at
Arizona State University (ASU), to start next summer? It is a
summers-only program.

LOW-COST! Teachers in 15 western states can apply for IN-STATE tuition, a
considerable savings! This opportunity is through WICHE. The application
deadline is April 1, each year. The 15 states are listed at
www.wiche.edu/states .

Physics and chemistry teachers find the ASU summer MNS program to be of
great value. Why:
* an effective implementation of STEM!
* hands-on, minds-on, interactive engagement.
* practical for the high school & TYC classroom.
* interdisciplinary courses -- useful for chemistry teachers too.
* 3-dimensional teaching; aligned with "Framework for K-12 Science
Education", the research basis for NGSS.

Outcomes:
* 75 teachers have earned the MNS degree since inception in 2001 by Prof.
David Hestenes.
* Teachers love the courses. Teaching is satisfying because students LEARN.
* It can qualify you to teach Dual Enrollment physics.
* It is similar to Finland's Master degree for physics teachers: courses
combine content with research-based pedagogy, and teachers do action
research. (Finland is high in test scores of 15-year-olds.)

Timeline:
* Most teachers take 3 summers, but a few finish in two. Flexible; no
cohorts.
* Courses begin on June 10. 2 sessions in summer. 2nd session ends on
Thurs. Aug 1.

FINANCIAL AID for degree-seekingTEACHERS:
1) Teachers in high poverty (Title I) schools can get FORGIVABLE Direct
loans up to $17,500.
See modeling.asu.edu/MNS/MNS.html
2) TEACH grants for new out-of-field physics teachers in high poverty
schools.

Financial aid for NON-degree teachers & MNS degree candidates:
3) Ask your principal NOW for Federal Title II funds - for ASU tuition, or
travel, housing.
4) Ask local service organizations (Rotary, Kiwanis, etc.): see

MNS degree TIPS:
* The GRE is not required.
* Teachers can transfer up to TWELVE credits into the degree program!
* Some teachers take PHS 530, a Modeling Workshop in mechanics, BEFORE
they apply for the MNS degree. Consider doing that, next June 10-28.
