What I should have said was something like:
  the modern (Minkowski spacetime) view of special relativity
  and general relativity, both of which are post-1898 but not
  particularly statistical.


The principle of relativity itself goes back to Galileo (1632).
It bugs me when people get this wrong.  Sorry.
