[Phys-L] The pleasure of finding ... out! Was: Re: Millenium technology prize, Dynamic Universe

However, Dr. Suntola felt that
not having money for his invention was not important; the pleasure of
finding out was a reward of itself.

(Feynman)

Yes! Two kinds: Those who do it for the money and those …

I’ve an entrepreneurial friend [Bcc’d] who's made much from a coupala inventions (one paid for his trophy house and tother is continuing income. When he used something I’d developed w/o attribution, I complained, writing him that I'm not money rewarded, but by attribution. He, of course, derives pleasure from his inventions, but it’s his income.

So, “we" are fortunate, paid academically, to be free to learn and create. Many, however, are driven, tho in poverty, to also create.

bc would be in poverty w/o munificent spouse.

Hi again!

The Finnish technology prize is a kind of Finnish Nobel prize (I million
euros). This year a Finnish physicist, Dr . Suntola, received it:

I listened to his interview. He had tried to sell his invention to the
semiconductor industry in the 80s but they felt that they didn't need it.
They do need it now, big time, but his patent had expired so he got no money
for his invention (besides the prize money). However, Dr. Suntola felt that
not having money for his invention was not important; the pleasure of
finding out was a reward of itself.

Interestingly, he has developed a competing theory for general relativity. I
know, this is what crackpots really like to do, but Dr. Suntola is not
exactly a village idiot (I learned this expression from JD, thanks!). It is
a safe bet to say that he is in error but perhaps his ideas in this area are
nevertheless interesting since his modelling allows calculations which can
be compared with the predictions of the GR (or so he says). If someone is
interested, his free ebook is available here:
