[Phys-L] Yahoo does not play nicely with mailing lists

Gmail sends the mail to spam and this is what gmail says:

*Why is this message in Spam?* It has a from address in yahoo.com but has
failed yahoo.com's required tests for authentication.

This is not the fault of gmail, nor of phys-l.

The practice of /forwarding/ email has been around since
the dawn of email. Mailing lists are a legitimate, familiar,
and widely-used example of forwarding.

In April 2014 yahoo announced a policy of abusing the DKIM
aka DMARC anti-spoofing technology to break all forms of
forwarding. For additional general information about this
issue:

John Levine, who literally wrote the book on email, expressed
the opinion that yahoo mail users should just switch to using
another email provider.

=================

Going forward, some policy decisions ought to be made.

1) One option is to document that yahoo mail is not supported.
This seems reasonable to me.

2) It's not ideal, but another option is for the list software
to mung the From: address.

This victimizes the list server, requiring it to emit non-RFC-compliant
messages. If at all possible, this hack should only be applied
to yahoo mail (and any other providers who adopt similarly
idiotic policies).

These and various other less-than-ideal options are discussed
in a "mailman" context at:
