Moisture content of the air in the balls could change this dramatically also. Wet air is not a very ideal gas.

I wonder how quickly they deflate if you fill them with helium, or some other gas to which the skin will be more permiable.

The whole premise of the article seems to be based
on wildly erroneous physics.

Many of the errors could be explained if Prof. Schmaltz
dropped a factor of 2.2, presumably degrees C versus F.
