Re: [Phys-L] Invention and marketing needed by next Christmas - Candles

Thanks BC.

Every once in a while we need little reminders that we are actually human beings and not dogmatically programmed automatons. I have to laugh when I visit friends who have "stoves" that operate by quartz heaters and have a projected "flame" that makes them look "real" (actually they just look tacky). To me, there's nothing like occasionally putting real logs in the fireplace and feeling the warmth of real fire. Humans learned how to control fire eons ago - it seems inhuman to watch fireplaces on TV or feel the unreal heat of quartz stoves.

The white glare of an LED will never replace the warm light of a real candle or the feel of wax dripping down your hand.

Reminds me of what Brits called an e-heater: electric fire, and, of course, it had plastic (ceramic?) coal and a rotating light. (late 60’s in Staffordshire, Joule’s country)

Also the urban myth of the horse figure on an early ‘bile.

bc lives in Steinbeck country, and he and Gate Keeper required a fire place when they moved to Salinas.

p.s. Immediately told where to purchase a 1/2 ton of coal and how to bank the fire. Messy, so when it was all consumed, switched to a paraffin heater. I’ve posted this, but …

I’d covered the single pane windows w/ p. sheet, so the room somewhat sealed. The flame would rise up after a time and flame out, periodically. Soon I related opening a door to restoring the flame. A great safety feature! I had also covered the fireplace, so I cut a hole in the card board and fastened a tube to the cover and set near the air intake louvers of the heater.

Political: When I left < 0800 (for research (Keele) I’d find mail thru the door. When I returned > 1700, I’d find the second delivery. I think this changed during Thatcher’s regime, and much else.
Free bus from city centre to Keele about a dozen times a day, more often during commute times. Keele paid Potteries Motor Traction for this service. ** PMT was mixed: County Council owned about half; remainder stock holders.

** Similar to bus pass for retirees at UCSC
