Re: [Phys-L] Liars?

New data may well refine how we view the first decade of this century,

Probably not. No refinement is necessary.

There was never any semblance of a so-called hiatus in the
"first decade of this century". The only way you could
cook up such a thing would be to start the interval in 1998
... a monstrous El Niño year.

In 2003 it was said there had been no warming in 5 years.
In 2008 it was said there had been no warming in 10 years.
In 2013 it was said there had been no warming in 15 years.

Now they've stopped trying to be subtle and they just say
"since 1998". The fact that they harp on 1998 as opposed
to some less-obviously-biased year makes it plain for all
to see that they've got their thumb on the scale.

your interval on non-El Niño years.
-- If you want to compare oranges to oranges, start and
end your interval on comparably strong El Niño years.
++ Or just look at the long term and don't be stupid
and/or dishonest about short-term fluctuations.
++ And look at other things e.g. ocean temperatures,
which fluctuate less. We don't have ocean records
going back quite so far into history, but we have
enough to settle questions about recent fluctuations.
++ Or better yet, look at energy, not just temperature.

This is obvious now and has been obvious all along. I'm
on record (in the phys-l archives and elsewhere) as saying
so all along.
