Re: [Phys-L] How Old Is the Shepherd? An Essay About Mathematics Education

In response to my post "Re: How Old Is the Shepherd? An Essay About Mathematics Education" [Hake (2014)] a Math-Teach subscriber posted under the pseudonym "Carleton Washburne" (2014):

"Someone is going to have to help me out here. Who is Richard Hake? Why is his post labeled {Spam?} Why is he criticizing not the content of my posts but their form? Is he some sort of Internet version of Miss Manners? And is there a limit to how many exclamation marks someone can use before his writing officially becomes self-satire?'

To which Robert Hansen (2014), probably taking clues from "Carleton Washburne's" strident advocacy of progressive education and his insulting rhetoric, responded:

"If I were to guess, you ["Carleton Washburne"] are Michael Goldenberg, and he is certainly aware of who Richard Hake is. You can go on record here and say that you are not Michael Goldenberg, or say something evasive. Or ignore the reference to Michael Goldenberg as you have been."

So far "Carleton Washburne" has made no *substantive* response to Hansen's reference to Michael Goldenberg. So the question remains:

Q. Who is "Michael Goldenberg," aka "Michael Paul Goldenberg"?

A. A Google search for "Michael Paul Goldenberg" (with the quotes) yielded 12,600 hits at <http://bit.ly/10oCmRz> on 06 Nov 2014 08:49-0800.

My comparison of MPG's posts on the first Google search hit "Rational Mathematics Education" (RME) <http://bit.ly/1ooedWM> with those of "CW" on Math-Teach at <http://bit.ly/1E78PJt> suggests that Hansen's guess that "CW" is MPG is *wrong*. Although both "CW" and MPG are strident advocates of progressive education and masters of insulting rhetoric, in my opinion "CW" lacks the astute judgement of MPG.

Another question is:

Q. Why does "CW" chose to post under the pseudonym "Carleton Washburne"?

A. Evidently in honor of the late progressive education champion Carleton Wolsey Washburne.

According to the Wikipedia entry at <http://bit.ly/1shplBd>:

"Carleton Wolsey Washburne (December 2, 1889 – November 17, 1968) was an American educator and education reformer. He served as the superintendent of schools in Winnetka, Illinois, United States from 1919 to 1943 and is most notably associated with the Winnetka Plan <http://bit.ly/1x9mak7> that he developed for his district. . . . . . . . . he combined the ideas of Dewey with his experiences at the Francis W. Parker school to create a progressive education curriculum. His work caught the attention of Frederic Burk, the president of the San Francisco State Teachers College, who hired him to teach at the institution's affiliated elementary school. Washburne taught there for five years, serving as head of the science department. While there, he conducted research on preadolescence and studied at the University of California, Berkeley, becoming one of the first recipients of a doctorate in education."
