Seems to be a nonsequitur. The text is, I believe, by Peter Scott, not Bill Burke. I have written to Pete to inquire. Bill Burke was a very talented relativist. I only met him once, but I have read much of his fine “Spacetime, Geometry, Cosmology” book, which I recommend.
