Re: [Phys-L] Private schools

Interesting you said that... most of the lay teachers in our local diocesan schools are very good teachers... they have their slackers also, but for the most part the teachers are certified and do a good job. They use the same textbooks as our local good districts and they seem to separate their school policies from their conservative church policies.

Of course, like all private schools they can and do boot out problem students regularly... every quarter we would receive about a half dozen such students who couldn't maintain their strict rules. So, back to us they came. Usually I couldn't see what was wrong... the students who came back from the local Catholic schools were well behaved and usually up close to the academics where we were. I questioned some and usually it was for smoking pot or too overtly flirting with the opposite sex (being polite here). The occasional over use of curse words. But, rarely did I ever encounter an actual gang member or violent student from a Catholic school.

(Aside: Interesting story... my next door neighbor's boy went through the local diocesan schools from K to 11. Then he went to our nearby Catholic high school... but was suddenly kicked out in his senior year...why? They caught him smoking pot inside the school so they kicked him out. Nicest kid you ever want to meet... polite, never caused any trouble for his mom or us, baby-sat my son. There must have been more you would think... but his mom was angry... she had several conferences with the headmaster (a rather nice priest I met once at a meeting) but until she was sent a letter there was no indication that her son was being expelled. So, he entered our district's best high school in his senior year. He was not in the top ten percent, but did quite well and graduated without incident. Evidently, the Catholic school did a decent job!)

Catholic schools (at least around here) are no longer staffed by a cadre of nuns. The bulk of the teachers are lay people.
