Re: [Phys-L] Private schools

A selected dictionary of special schools and programs:

suspend (suspension)...1st definition: in-house suspension (simply called inhouse): to be sent to some room where they sit and twiddle their thumbs or do homework sent there by other teachers. 2nd definition: to be sent home where they will play video games for two weeks and the administration expects the teachers to give "makeup work"

expulsion: ??? full expulsion doesn't happen: usual definition: to be sent to some alternative school where the teachers are like drill sergeants and they have to attend indefinitely.

alternative school: one of several schools for incorrigibles until they are of age (usually 16 or 18 I forget which). then they are allowed to drop out and become the police's problem.

private alternative schools: receives such students from several different districts... teachers there are usually big and tough and the places are the last line before true expulsion. funded by the sending districts.

30 years ago they didn't have in-house... we had a special school way across town and kids were told... "behave yourself or you will be sent to Catto (which was the name of the school for the really "bad" kids.
They really didn't have special ed either nor did they have "inclusion" because everyone was "included" As an 7th and 8th grader I remember tutoring a classmate whose reading level was about 5th grade. The English teacher put us in a small store-room and I taught this kid how to read. I was good at it and that was one of the things that turned me on to teaching. This boy actually listened to my instruction and got his reading level up to 7th grade when we left that school for the junior high.

Our high school had sections: ie... 12 -1 all the way to 12-15. lower numbers were college prep, middle numbers were "business" and higher numbers were "practical arts" or "general" General kids used to beat up some of us college preps and they bragged as to the highest number classes they were in, such as "Hey, I am 12-15, don't(mess) with me."

The "good old days"...???

So, you add back the ones who can't hack the discipline in the charter or private school... You seem to forget we HAVE to keep them. When was the last time you TAUGHT in a public school in the city? And, YES, you have to see it from the trenches to understand what goes on. It's so easy to observe from the safety of your university ivory tower.

[LaMontagne] (Sorry for the different format - doing this from home.)
The last time I taught High School was over 30 year ago. So I will concede that some things are different. I was teaching in Boston close to Harvard Square. Drugs were rampant. I used to reserve the last row in my physics classes for the kids that were too stoned to know where they were - let them sleep it off. When they got rowdy, a call to the assistant principal would end up with them being ejected and then suspended for a week or so.

Are you telling me that suspension is no longer an option? Kids in my daughters school a few years ago were routinely suspended - especially if weapons were involved - but maybe they can't do that where you live.
