Globally, this winter was colder than the 1979-2009 average for global satellite temperature
measurements. The warm winter in the US is largely due to the location of the jet stream
(http://www.climatewatch.noaa.gov/video/2012/winter-2011-2012-recap).
People do not need to look at any news outlet at all to know it was a mild winter in the US.
Weather forecasters did not do a good job of predicting this winter...

I take issue with your presumption that conservatives only get their news from one source. I am
conservative and I do not even have access to that one source. My news comes from news outlets all
over the world.
Before, you jump to the conclusion that a conservative physicist isn't representative of
most conservatives, my experience, at least with conservatives I've run into (42 % of adult Americans
self-identify as conservative, as opposed to 19 % that self-identify as liberal)
and its many, that I am
not alone.
There are two kinds of people in the world, those that make ASSumptions, and those that don't.
