Long time friend of mine -- Dept. chair and co-editor of a math J. I only remember two things he's said.

One of his more important jobs was keeping the "bad" teachers away from the freshman, and if a student sleeps, a good sign he's not afraid of you. That was a long time ago.

bc remembers Garrett Hardin saying fear inhibits learning.

OTOH, B. Russell wrote how fear (of death) concentrates the mind.
