I am reminded  of John Grant's "Corrupted Science".  The sixth (of six) chapter is "The Political Corruption of Science (Hitler's Germany, Stalin's Russia, and Bush's America).  I haven't read far enuff to find any mention of modern or Renaissance Italy.
