Re: [Phys-l] Typesetting Physics Equations

LaTeX (preferably in any of its modern variations -- pdflatex or xelatex or even lyx) for any serious typesetting. For front ends, on Windows, you will probably want miktex -- miktex.org, I think. On a Mac, it's hard to beat TeXShop, with LaTeXiT for small jobs. See <http://www.tug.org/mactex/2011/> for a complete TeXLIve 2011 distribution and <http://pages.uoregon.edu/koch/texshop/> for the most current TeXShop. (Note the different versions for Lion vs. for prior systems.) LaTeX certainly has a learning curve, but once you're over the hump it is so far superior to any of the alternatives you will never look back if you do any serious writing with mathematics in it.

(If you want to torture yourself with MathType, well, that's your business.)

On the web, have a look at MathJax -- www.mathjax.org.
