In some PER studies, the conclusion is "students interpret heat as a state function". The researchers prefer heat as a process-dependent variable. They believe that it can be a language problem: for example, chaleur [French] or Wa¨rme [German])

There is also disagreement on defining heat for conduction, convection and radiation.
