In the recent discussion, there was a segue from mushrooms to plants.

Nobody said that mushrooms were plants ... but on the off chance that
anybody was confused, let's be clear that mushrooms are *not* plants.
They are fungi.

Some fungi kinda sorta superficially look like plants, but they're not.

For more than 40 years, plants, animals, and fungi have each had their
own kingdom. There is overwhelming evidence (from molecular genetics
and otherwise) to support this classification. Fungi are marginally
closer to animals than plants, but giving them their own kingdom is
conventional and reasonable.
