An addendum:

An acquaintance just from Mombassa had been to the beach, just sitting there ("not moving a muscle" he dripped sweat, probably not hotter than in the Rift, but much much more unpleasant. I decided to skip that trip.

Well, ... on my excursion into the depths of the Rift Valley to visit the Masai, my arms were soon coated w/ a white power -- I never sweated; it evaporated before there was any visible water -- and yes I tasted the powder -- salt obviously.
