Baby vision brings to mind a memorable experiment.

If a plexiglass plate is placed to bridge between two lab benches,
a baby that's capable of crawling will stop crawling at the visual edge
of the bench, where the floor is visible beneath, though the surface is smooth
over bench and bridge.

A sort of early built-in safety mechanism, apparently.
