Addendum to my previous note:
Think about the meaning and etymology of the word itself:
Equilibrium. It speaks of equality.
Mechanical equilibrium doesn't mean zero force; it means
*equal* forces.
Thermal equilibrium doesn't mean no energy flow; it means
*equal* energy flow in and out.
Chemical equilibrium doesn't mean no reaction rate; it means
*equal* reaction rates to the left and to the right.
