For some time now I have dealt with this concern in part by using a
nonlinear combination of the scores from exams and those from all
other aspects of the course. In a nutshell, while I am willing to
bend over backwards to give D's and even C's for "effort" (including
scores on terribly unreliable measures like homework), it counts for
a lot less if you're aiming for a B and the only way to get an A is
by doing well on the exams. The relevant section of my syllabus is
