[Phys-l] car parks and

I visited the Gran Sasso neutrino observatory in September*. There is an experiment there called OPERA that is designed to detect the tau neutrino. It has more than 150,000 lead foil and nuclear emulsion laminated "bricks" in a large array like a car park, and a robot that pulls a brick whenever an appropriate coincidence counter sequence is detected. The robot was triggered while I was there and we watched it pull a brick for developing and replace it with a fresh** brick, all done autonomously. They have "seen" the tau neutrino (one event!): <http://www.lngs.infn.it/lngs_infn/contents/lngs_en/public/educational/physics/NEWS_docs/OPERA_press_rel_May_2010.pdf>. Google to find out more about the experiment and others at the observatory. See, for example, <http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=M3aB_zUZ1c8> .

*Our entire Italian science history tour is documented at <http://maps.google.com/maps/ms?ie=UTF8&hl=en&msa=0&msid=115558319698281478388.00048ab8b052acbfd4007&ll=43.125043,12.260742&spn=7.191554,16.907959&z=7>.

**One might wonder where they had stored the brick to keep it fresh. All the new bricks were in the room with OPERA.

Still on the subject of traffic and cars, but this is on a different note. Here is a way to eliminate parking on public squares. A completely automated underground parking garage in Budapest. You must see this! (one question... how would they handle SUV's and vans?)
