Not sure about on the space shuttle. The one I have uses gravity return of the liquid. Therefore, the tube can be used in a vertical position, or at least a slanted position. I think both vertical and slanted gravity return is common.

I seem to recall that the heat pipes included some sort of wick to return
the liquid to the hot end.
