[Phys-l] PhysTEC Call for Proposals

The Physics Teacher Education Coalition (PhysTEC) requests proposals
for new sites to develop model physics teacher education programs.
Proposals are solicited for two levels of support, $100k per year or
$25k per year, for up to three years. Minority-serving institutions
are strongly encouraged to apply.

An initial letter is due November 5. A webinar on October 18 at 1
p.m. EDT will discuss the RFP. More information and the program
solicitation are available at http://www.phystec.org/solicitation

Did you know?
- Only 33% of high school physics teachers have a degree in physics or
physics education
- Principals and Superintendents consistently rate physics as one of
the fields with the greatest shortage of teachers
- Only 36% of physics departments have a concentration, track or
specialization for future teachers, many with no graduates in the past
two years
- The fraction of students taking physics nearly doubled in the last
two decades, currently 37% of all high school graduates
- The last time the U.S. participated in the TIMSS advanced science
survey, U.S. students were last in physics, behind 14 other nations.
