Re: [Phys-l] paint your roof?

In this sub-tropical climate, subjective data on identical objects in identical places
with white or black rooves is easier to come by, if one concentrates on cars.
White is favored, but some of us get along with black on other grounds....

Has anyone come across any relevant experimental data here? That is, two
identical houses built in the Midwest where you get cold winters and warm
summers, identically insulated, one with a traditional dark asphalt (or
similar) shingled roof the other with a 'white' roof (of appropriately
robust material). Identical heating/cooling hardware, identical temperature
settings (auto thermostats), controlled housing use (not one elderly couple
who never go out and one family of 6 with kids running in and out
constantly), placed on nearly identical sites, and then measure the energy
usage through at least one complete year. Data from this kind of test would
be conclusive, I think. Then one could play the statistics game and make
whatever analogies that will impress the press! ;-)

Indiana and see how well it works!]

At last! A note of appropriate skepticism....
