Oops! I retract my question! I just calculated the average value of lambda as:
<lambda> = h/m * integral from 0 to inf of (1/v)*D(v)*dv
where D(v) is the Maxwell distribution, and lo and behold I find:
<lambda> = capital-lambda
So it all works out! -Carl
