Re: [Phys-l] DATA, FACTS, LAWS, THEORIES

Well if Newton called them laws then they must be laws! I have a copy of
the original Latin where the word law does not appear, but it is a very
brief copy. It may be from the first edition.

"Principle" surely?

If I am to believe the Motte translation of the Principia
in Cajori's revision of the Third Edition 1725-6,
Newton prefaced Book One with "Axioms, Or Laws Of Motion"
which set out ten paragraphs titled Law One, Two and Three,
then Corollary One to Six, then a scholium.
