What to tell my IB class about these things?

a) distinguish between a "traditional" magnetic monopole and the use of the term here.

b) use it as yet another example of the many quasiparticles that are explained by "collective" (correlated?) effects. Other examples include exciton, polaron, phonon.

Note that the original article in Nature uses the term "monopole" blatantly as well, although they obviously are talking about quasiparticles, and say so in the abstract/body.
