On the contrary, much of what I advocate is out of class work. Reflective writing involves metacognitive engagement with material in the textbook before it is covered in all of my classes. In some classes, students perform out-of class groupwork and in some classes students have to write a one page essay at home at the end of each week. In most classes, students also have to do the usual homework problems. Although there is some resistance at first, by midterm, 95% of students are very happy to perform reflective writing and indeed many report carrying it over to other courses, where it is not required.
