Re: [Phys-l] refraction lab

Anyone do the refraction lab by filing a clear semicircular dish with
water? I am wondering if there are other clear liquids that could be used

rubbing alcohol
sugar water
salt water
carbonated soft drink

I thought about Karo syrup or liquid soap, but cleanup might be an issue
and I didn't want to scratch the dish. Any ideas?

For a paper on liquids of high refractive index, see this description
of three part mixtures to RI = 2.0
<www.minsocam.org/ammin/AM36/AM36_746.pdf>

Some other candidates, though they are all expensive, I expect:

"Thermacure" ZAP50 = MEK peroxide in dimethyl phthalate RI = 1.45

Liquid silicone rubber can have RI similar to silicates.

Aniseed oil RI = 1.55+

Citronellol 1.46

l-carvone 1.49

methyl chervicol 1.51
