I seem to remember a few years ago reading a proposal to "burn" nuclear
wasste, both rendering it relatively harmless and yielding some energy in
wthe process. Does anyone else have such a memory, and has it gotten
anywhpere? I'm skeptical of any government's ability to keep tons of
stuffp secure for thousands of years.

I remember a vitrification process that would encapsulate the waste in a
glass material to reduce the reactivity with air - water etc. We have
also had the ability to recycle the fuel for 15+ years. I worked at the
Idaho National Engineering Lab in the early 90's and the Chemical
Processing Plant there was recycling military fuel. The amount of waste
remaining was just a few percent of the original fuel mass. I am still at
a loss as to why the government will not allow the recycling of civilian
fuel. ???????
