[Phys-l] nuclear waste storage (was RE: Darwin, Republican, Democrats)

Burning does not sound viable to me. As far as storing for thousands of years, I am not concerned
with that. I would be happy with hundreds of years because as technology moves forward, the waste
may be treated differently or have uses that we are unaware of at present.

I seem to remember a few years ago reading a proposal to "burn" nuclear waste, both rendering it relatively harmless and yielding some energy in the process. Does anyone else have such a memory, and has it gotten anywhere? I'm skeptical of any government's ability to keep tons of stuff secure for thousands of years.

Rick and all:

I have been a "true believer" in Yucca Mountain for a long time now [ 8-) ] and see it as the
only viable site. Do you know whether any other sites have been recently considered in any
seriousness?

Well _some_ Republicans don't believe in evolution, but both Democratic
candidates seem to be against the Yucca Mountain nuclear depository which,
if cancelled, would waste billions of dollars and set back any chance of
viable nuclear waste storage for another decade or two. So take your pick
of 'scientific' topics and you'll find any candidate out there is at odds
with something you 'believe' in. I do think that the anti-evolutionists are
gone now (well being politicians, they can all lie so well it is hard to
know what any of them actually believe) but one should look at stands on
other technical and scientific issues as well. I doubt that there are any
stereo-types (other than mine above ;-) that truly hold. Then again, there
are those Texans......
