[Phys-l] Non-existence of Transverse and Longitudinal Relativistic Mass



In some of the discussion on the "Invariant mass and ..." thread, some seem to think that the value of the relativistic mass depends on the angle between the applied force and the velocity.

Please read "In Defense of Relativistic Mass", page 1034, Section VII, where the error that leads to this supposed dependence is discussed.

In short, the error is trying to state Newton's second law as |F| = m|a| when m is not constant.
