Hmmm...Marty seems to have a comparable problem in
conceptualizing natural selection.
To paraphrase him:
"Traits do not develop so the organism can become better suited...."

(Quite! "...so the organism can become better suited" is another
phrase from the teleology mindset.)
Traits survive which are better suited for survival in
the conditions at hand. Surely, this point is not a difficult one?
[And, don't call me Surely, of course. :-) ]
