[Phys-l] a side comment on different creationists

I am retired now but was formerly head of a high school science department. About twenty or thirty years ago a parent came in and wanted to talk to me about what our biology teachers were teaching. As I was sounding her out as to what her views or objections might be I was surprised by a couple of comments.

She said she believed the Biblical story of Adam and Eve was true and important but she had no problem with the earth being much older and with dinosaurs and cavemen exiting before then. She agreed there was a lot of evidence for such creatures. and that the writers of the Bible were likely to be unaware of them.

Her view was that what was significant about Adam and Eve was that people had developed who could understand and be aware of and have a relationship with God.

I never did ask her what church she went to and i don't believe the majority of literalists would interpret it that way but I thought it was an interesting accomodation.
