Re: [Phys-l] Schlieren photography in high school laboratory

Loren Winters <winters@ncssm.edu> has supervised high school students in schlieren photography projects. I found one of their photos at
<http://courses.ncssm.edu/hsi/special.htm>.

Andrew Davidhazy, who was mentioned in earlier posts to this thread, has been doing schlieren photography with undergraduate photo-tech students at RIT for many years.

A few years ago one of my undergraduate physics majors and I developed a non-focusing schlieren video system that photographs larger subjects and potentially costs much less to build than one based on telescope mirrors. However, you would need to make a background image on a large-format photographic printer such as a Durst Lambda to build the system. Some of the larger photo finishing shops have this kind of printer. The student, Matt Waters, made a web site about the method,
<http://livephoto.rit.edu/schlieren/>
and published a booklet,

Vern Lindberg posted a link to the abstract our paper earlier in the thread.

Has anyone tried carrying out Schlieren photography (or even videography) in
a high-school-level-equipped laboratory? Any tales of success or woe?
