[Phys-l] Fwd: 5 physics & chem faculty positions at ASU-Polytechnic campus

[A forwarded message received on Dec. 12, 2007 from Robert Nemanich, Chair
of the Department of Physics at ASU in Tempe. The announcement is dated
Dec. 6, 2007. -- Jane Jackson]

Arizona State University announces a search to recruit faculty members for
its School of Applied Arts and Sciences at the Polytechnic Campus.

The Polytechnic Campus, located on 600 acres in southeast Mesa, was opened
in 1996 to offer an applied approach to professional and technological
programs that meet business and societal needs. The campus is home to the
College of Technology and Innovation, School of Applied Arts and Sciences,
Morrison School of Management and Agribusiness, and the School of
Educational Innovation and Teacher Preparation. Today, more than 8,500
students are enrolled in 40 degree programs leading to bachelors, masters,
and Ph.D. degrees and enjoy an environment characterized by small class
sizes, an integrated curriculum, and accessible faculty. Degrees
incorporate practical and theoretical exercises, weaving science and
technology throughout the programs. The Polytechnic Campus shares access
to the Williams Gateway Airport, a reliever airport to Phoenix Sky Harbor
International airport, and is located in one of the fastest growing regions
in the United States.

The School of Applied Arts and Sciences has approximately 1000
undergraduate and graduate majors, with plans for continued expansion as
the campus grows to 15,000 students over the next five years. New faculty
will benefit from the extensive capabilities and programs at other nearby
ASU campuses. In addition, new faculty will have an opportunity to engage
with appropriate graduate faculty programs across the institution.
Successful candidates will be founding members of the mathematics, physics
and chemistry faculty in the newly formed School and will help shape the
future of research and teaching within the School and Polytechnic Campus.
Please see our website for more information www.poly.asu.edu/saas/html/.

Required qualifications for each position include a Ph.D. in an appropriate
scientific field. Desired qualifications for each of the positions include
a strong commitment to excellence in teaching and experience working in an
interdisciplinary environment in an institution that emphasizes applied
knowledge and use-inspired research. Undergraduate education and
involvement of undergraduates in interdisciplinary research will be
important components of the programs.

PHYSICS: Two tenure-track (rank open) faculty positions are available in
Physics. Required qualifications include a Ph.D. in physics or a closely
related scientific discipline, teaching and a research record appropriate
to rank. Successful candidates will be responsible for teaching
introductory and advanced physics courses. ASU emphasizes physics research
in areas including: biological physics and medical physics, nanoscale
science and phenomena, particle physics and astrophysics, and societal
impact and science education pedagogy.

One lecturer position (rank open) is available in Physics. Required
qualifications include a Ph.D. in physics or a closely related scientific
discipline. Successful candidates will be responsible for teaching
introductory physics and overseeing instructors of laboratory sections.

CHEMISTRY: Two tenure-track (rank open) faculty positions are available in
Chemistry. Required qualifications include a Ph.D. in chemistry,
biochemistry or a closely related scientific discipline, teaching and a
research record appropriate to rank. One position is for an
organic/bio-organic chemist who will be responsible for teaching
undergraduate organic courses. The other position is open to all areas of
chemistry with some preference for inorganic or chemical education
specialties. This individual will be responsible for teaching
undergraduate general chemistry courses.

(Other faculty positions: three tenure-track in mathematics, one in health
sciences. jj)

Applications will be accepted until the position is closed, but reviewed
bi-weekly as needed. Interested parties are encouraged to submit their
materials by January 31, 2008 to receive optimal consideration. Please
electronically submit a current curriculum vita and cover letter to:
