Re: [Phys-l] Volcanos

If you saw the NOVA on supervolcanos, they have been known to throw the
world into an ice age. The sulfur acts as a heat reflecting shield.
Now
there is an active supervolcano under Yellowstone that erupts
approximately
every 600k years, and it last erupted 600k years ago. When it goes there
will be a cooling snap, and a large fraction of the US will be wiped out.

Why does this cheer me up? Hmmm.

Is it because your unfavorite state will be wiped out? I wonder if homeland
security has even considered this scenario? They are so busy harassing
little old ladies at airports that they probably have little time to do any
real thinking. OTOH since Bush probably believes that the world is only
6000 years old they are probably not allowed to consider geological
catastrophes.

They have also been measuring a rise in the land which is consistent with
the humungous magma chamber under Yellowstone filling. It might be possible
to predict the eruption. After all they did it in the Phillipines. But
where would all the people go? All the Californians can't move to New
England. The other nearby states have much smaller populations, and should
not be a problem. Indeed many of the other adjacent states may eventually
have an outflow of population as the water dries up.
