Re: [Phys-l] IR thermometer buy

L!

I doubt a $10 IR thermometer. is that sophisticated *, even in this 21st. cent. They likely make use of the T^4 relation, tho. in the cheapies range probably just use a linear digitization of the emf (potential) created by the bolometer.

Not the most academic:

I disassembled a RS one some timer ago and it didn't have a dispersive element, just a thermo-pile and chip(s).

bc, who eventually will adapt for use as a spectroscope, etc. detector.
p.s. the sophisticated ones are hundreds of $$.

Harbor Freight is offering a neat pocket IR thermometer on sale for $9.99. Works fine!
If you have no local Harbor Freight store, goto:

1) I remember reading that T is deduced from the shape of the wavelength spectrum in the IR region (black body distribution. But how is this accomplished?

2) How are these thermometers used, in practice? The role of the laser beam is not clear to me.
