I don't follow J's argument to which he refers below.

I thought the earth is falling towards the sun and so is the apple ( in addition to wards the earth's centre of gravity), so it falls assuming a symmetrical earth and no rotation, straight down.

BTW if the above weren't so, wouldn't a plum-bob not be plum?
