Actually the problem was quite a bit nastier than that.

All of sci-ed-ga.org was offline for a while. The nameservers for that
domain
Name Server: VAXD.GAT.COM
Name Server: NAMESERV.GAT.COM
were unreachable from where I sit (and perhaps completely unreachable).

I'm not entirely sure who dropped the ball.
I didn't check to see whether all of gat.com was affected.

It wasn't a cable-cut or other geography-related problem; other sites
in the vicinity were unaffected.
