On the other hand, could it be that those same students think of energy as caloric? If that is the case would it be useful to name the misconception so as to deal with it?

I see no reason to bring it up in class.
IMHO the less said about it, the better.

I consider the word to have value only for the nerdiest of trivia games
and jokes, along with other "vocabulary" words such as
orpiment
spiritus veneris
oil of dippel
