c 1783 Antoine Lavoisier seems to have wanted to trash the "phlogiston" theory and proposed the "caloric" theory in its place.
What were the major facets of the phlogiston theory that offended Lavoisier -- that the caloric theory remedied?
Who/what was the major factor in overturning the caloric theory?
To what extent has the caloric theory been overturned?
