[Phys-L] plastic toxin leaching. Was: Re: Warning: Don't ask for Library loans on Political Topics

Incidentally I regularly get E-mail from intelligent people about things
like the dangers of microwaving in plastic containers, not reading certain
messages, bad files implanted on my hard drive... Despite the fact that I
investigate these and then expose them as hoaxes, the same people persist in
sending these things. They never go to the web sites that expose these hoax
messages. So, many are easily fooled.

Ever since I designed the temperature controller for the out gassing of
unpolymerized methylmethacrylate, I've been leery of microwaving food in
plastic containers. Of course heating plastic IOLs to just under their
softening point in a rough vacuum for twelve hours is a bit different
than a few mins at atm., ingested instead of implanted in the eye, etc.
So I checked the hoax site:

"The FDA article does admit that substances in plastics can leach into
food. However, the FDA does not consider this to be a significant risk
to humans. The FDA article

My comment: better safe than sorry -- the amounts are in themselves
safe; how about synergistically in combo. w/ all those other toxins
industry has bathed us? How much does the plastics industry lobby
legislators. Recently we read about the lack of independence of the
FDA, etc., etc.

bc, supposedly intelligent; easily fooled?

p.s. incidentally we paid a company mucho to compare raw and out gassed
IOLs using HPLC. That's what convinced up to outgass.
