I agree that most "why" questions, if taken literally, belong more to
metaphysics than to physics.
But often they shouldn't be taken literally. In my experience, when
people ask
"why ..."
they very commonly mean something more like
"how do we know ..."
in which case the appropriate answer is to rattle off the appropriate
experimental and theoretical evidence.
